What do I need to know?

Ridium's training read and the caveats before you trust the times.

Training read · Ridium AIRAGBRAI 2026 is a seven-day supported road tour of about 630 km and 4,885 m of rolling climbing from Onawa to Dubuque, so its main demand is repeating long days back to back rather than any single hard effort. Treat it as a multi-day endurance challenge where steady pacing, daily recovery, and consistent fueling matter more than top-end fitness.

  • Endurance

Because the week stacks roughly 90 km of rolling road riding day after day, build toward consecutive back-to-back long rides in training rather than one isolated long ride, so your body adapts to riding tired.

  • Pacing

With an extreme overall endurance load spread across seven days, ride the early days conservatively and well within a comfortable aerobic effort, since pacing a tour is about arriving fresh each morning rather than racing any single stage.

  • Fueling

Practice eating and drinking on the bike during your long training rides, and rehearse a routine of regular carbohydrate intake and steady hydration, because supporting many consecutive long days depends on consistent daily fueling.

  • Recovery

Plan deliberate between-day recovery such as easy spinning, refueling soon after each day, and protecting sleep, since the cumulative fatigue of seven straight riding days is the defining challenge of this route.

  • Heat

If late-July Iowa conditions turn hot or humid, increase hydration, ease your pace, and use rest stops to cool down, because riding many long days in heat compounds fatigue across the week.

  • Endurance

Use the published distance and elevation to anchor a roughly four-month aerobic build if you have about 16 weeks to prepare, progressively raising weekly hours and back-to-back ride volume on rolling terrain.
