What do I need to know?
Ridium's training read and the caveats before you trust the times.
Training read · Ridium AIRuta Larga is a 128 km timed road race through the Casablanca valley with roughly 1,830 m of climbing. Long flat and gently rolling vineyard roads are broken up by six short, punchy climbs with ramps up to about 18%. Prepare for sustained endurance, repeated above-threshold efforts on short hills, and confident riding in a fast GFNY mass start, where the long route also decides age-group qualification.
- Endurance
Build toward 4 to 5 hour rides so 128 km at race pace feels controlled. With around 85 km of flat valley roads, the main challenge is holding power and focus over time rather than any single climb.
- Climbing
The six climbs are short, mostly 2 to 7 km at 3 to 5% with ramps near 18%, not long mountain passes. Practise repeated 3 to 8 minute efforts above threshold and getting back on the gas at the top, because the climbs are where the selection happens.
- Pacing
It is a mass start and timed for age-group qualification, so resist the surge off the line. Sit in protected wheels on the flats, save your matches for the climbs, and avoid burning your race in the first hour.
- Technical
About 21 km of descending links the climbs. Rehearse cornering and descending at speed in a group so you can recover on the downhills and hold position rather than losing wheels.
- Fueling
Plan 60 to 90 g of carbohydrate per hour for a 4 to 5 hour effort and drink to thirst. The early start and long flat sections make it easy to under-fuel before the climbs arrive.
- Recovery
With around 14 weeks to prepare, plan a taper and easy days before race week so you arrive fresh. The long route rewards riders who are rested, not only fit.
Caveats
- Total climbing is roughly 1,800 to 1,950 m depending on whether you use official figures or the GPS track, so treat climb totals as approximate.
- The Casablanca valley is open and coastal-influenced, so be ready for wind on the long flat sections, especially later in the day.
