What do I need to know?

Ridium's training read and the caveats before you trust the times.

Training read · Ridium AIThe Gran Fondo is the queen route of La Cyclo: 186 km and about 2,273 m of climbing from the Canet-en-Roussillon coast into the Pyrenees-Orientales hills toward Ceret, Ille-sur-Tet and Tautavel. It is a UCI Gran Fondo World Series qualifier and an extreme endurance day, so deep aerobic base, smart climbing pacing, disciplined fueling across the three feed zones and respect for late-April Mediterranean heat and the Tramontane wind all decide your finish.

  • Endurance

Build the aerobic base for a 6 to 8 hour day. Progress toward weekly long rides of 4 to 6 hours with sustained climbing, so 186 km and 2,273 m become a matter of pacing and fueling rather than survival.

  • Climbing

Train the climbs you will meet: long tempo blocks and 8 to 20 minute threshold efforts on real gradients. The elevation is spread across rolling hills toward Ceret and Tautavel, so reward steady climbing rather than repeated surges.

  • Pacing

Pace conservatively early. With over 2,000 m to climb, start well below threshold, hold a sustainable tempo on the first climbs and keep reserves for the back half so you can still ride strongly past Tautavel toward the coast.

  • Fueling

Fuel and drink to a plan across the three feed zones at Llauro (km 42), Saint-Michel-de-Llotes (km 95) and Tautavel (km 139). Target 70 to 90 g of carbohydrate per hour and top up bottles at every stop; under-fueling is the classic Gran Fondo failure.

  • Heat

Prepare for heat and wind. Late April on the Roussillon coast can be warm and the Tramontane often blows hard on exposed plains, so heat-adapt, carry enough fluid and shelter in groups through crosswind sections.

Caveats
  • Distance and elevation use the official organizer figures; your GPS device may record a slightly different climbing total.
  • Late April in the Pyrenees-Orientales can be warm and the Tramontane wind is common on exposed sections; plan hydration and pacing accordingly.
