What do I need to know?

Ridium's training read and the caveats before you trust the times.

Training read · Ridium AIGFNY Cozumel's 154 km long route is two flat laps of the island on 8 November - success comes from sustained aerobic power, smart drafting and coping with Caribbean heat and crosswinds, not from climbing. The mass start is at 07:00 with a 15:00 course cutoff.

  • Endurance

Build the aerobic engine for 4.5-6 hours of almost uninterrupted pedalling. There are no descents to coast on, so prioritise long Zone 2 rides and weekly sustained tempo blocks across the final 12-14 weeks.

  • Pacing

On a pancake-flat course your power is on almost the whole time, so resist surging early. Hold a steady, repeatable effort through the first lap and aim to finish the second lap at least as strong - go too hard early and the flat terrain gives no chance to recover.

  • Fueling

Target 60-90 g of carbohydrate per hour and drink consistently with electrolytes from the start. In the heat your sweat and fuel needs stay high for hours, so rehearse your race-day eating and drinking on long training rides.

  • Heat

Early-November Cozumel is hot and humid. Heat-acclimate in the 10-14 days beforehand, start well hydrated, drink to thirst and beyond, and keep cool with iced bottles - managing core temperature matters as much as fitness here.

  • Technical

The exposed eastern side of the island delivers strong crosswinds. Practise riding in echelons and holding a steady line in wind, and stay alert in the bunch, where drafting saves the most energy over 154 km.

  • Recovery

Taper into race week and arrive on the island a few days early so your body adapts to the heat and humidity before a long, demanding day in the saddle.

Caveats
  • The course is flat, with maximum elevation around 15 m and negligible total climbing.
  • Roads are not fully closed to traffic - ride predictably and confirm road and safety arrangements with the organiser before race day.
