What do I need to know?

Ridium's training read and the caveats before you trust the times.

Training read · Ridium AIThe Gran is a demanding 164.6 km Sonoma County road route with roughly 3,075 m of climbing across 10 detected climbs and gradients reaching 18%. Most of the distance is flat or rolling, but the difficulty is concentrated in repeated steep climbs and technical descents, so it rewards sustained climbing strength paired with deep endurance.

  • Climbing

Build sustained climbing strength for the 10 detected climbs, anchored by a category-2 effort near km 55-64 (about 8.6 km gaining 395 m at roughly 4.6% average) plus several shorter ramps around 7-8% such as km 77 and km 120.

  • Endurance

Anchor long aerobic rides on the 164.6 km distance and roughly 3,075 m of total elevation gain so you can stay strong on the later climbs after km 100 rather than fading.

  • Technical

Practice steep, repeated climbing and confident descending, since gradients reach 18% and the GPX flags multiple technical descent sectors, including pitches in the first few kilometers and after the early climb near km 22.

  • Pacing

Pace the steep ramps conservatively early; with around 4.8 km of steep terrain and only about 6.9 km of moderate climbing, spikes of power above 7% gradient can be costly if repeated over the full distance.

  • Fueling

Rehearse on-bike fueling during long training rides so intake stays consistent across a route of this length, where the GPX flags fueling as a key demand.

  • Endurance

If preparing specifically for this route, a preparation window of roughly 14 weeks gives time to build the climbing-specific endurance the profile demands.
